restaurants and Thai
Bit of a hectic week or so, not helped by having a stinking cold with a cough I just can’t shift. But I met up with another food writer Fred Chan for lunch, which was a great chance just to talk food. Fred is an expert on Chinese and other such cuisines and has a wealth of knowledge on where to eat.
But now he is working on a new project, check out his blog at http://www.breakfastliverpool.blogspot.com/
He is working his way around Liverpool and Wirral searching out the best breakfasts. A perfect blog to look at when you need to find somewhere good for a big English fry-up. We enjoyed a really good fry-up at Alley Cats in Birkenhead, near Hamilton Square, and it is definitely somewhere I will be going back to. It is obviously very popular as it was packed at lunchtime and the service was excellent, cheerful and welcoming.
Where is your favourite place for breakfast?
A couple of restaurant reviews recently, at the Rookery House Hotel, near Nantwich, which is a great venue for a luxurious weekend away; I am especially looking forward to them opening their state of the art spa and gym next year. For a posh looking place it was not stuffy and then I checked out an interesting new addition to Heswall, a Thai restaurant. The reviews are at www.metro.co.uk.
One of my friends thinks we have too many Thai restaurants now in the region. What do you think? Is this just a fad or will they survive?
Off to Belfast for the weekend, eating at Cayenne and James Street South and will report back soon.

I don't believe there is such thing as too many Thai restaurants.
Well, maybe that's not entirely true. I guess it depends on whether or not they (individually) have anything unique to offer - different price range, significantly different menu, different ambiance, unique signature differences...
I find in Toronto in particular, the composition of the spectrum of Thai curries varies greatly from restaurant to restaurant (at Salad King, gold curry is king of spicy flavourfulness, but I've never seen it's match - at Spring Rolls it's the red curry, and most other places I've tried you can't beat the green curry).
